Parent Training/Coaching

I coach parents on how to use a system of reinforcement and consequences, as well as how to use various antecedent strategies and take data. This will lead to behavior reduction and more appropriate skills.

Behavior Reduction
Parents will learn various methods in supporting behavior reduction. The question to ask, is why are behaviors happening in the first place? What is maintaining challenging behaviors? How can this child get his or her needs met without engaging in challenging behaviors? Parents will learn how to support behaviors when they happen, as well as minimize them from happening in the first place. They will learn to give as little attention as possible for challenging behaviors, while delivering large amounts of attention for appropriate behaviors.

Replacement skills taught to help reduce challenging behaviors
Children will learn how to wait, tolerate “no,” transition quickly and engage in non-preferred activities. Parents will learn strategies in supporting their child in these new behaviors.

Additional Goals that can be supported

Parents can also learn to support their child in the following skills:

  • Trying new foods (staying seated at the table, eating less preferred foods)

  • Play skills (sharing, turn taking, compromising, play dates)

  • Conversation (responding to questions, statements, asking questions)

  • Independence with self help skills (brushing teeth, potty training, dressing)

  • Homework (being able to ask for help, ask for breaks, organize the homework)
